Development
In 1952, SYAU was officially founded with 6 academic departments and 8 courses. As one of the earliest 8 courses at SYAU, the undergraduate program in agricultural irrigation engineering was originally opened in the department of irrigation and water conservancy. The program was then named irrigation and water conservancy and was chaired by professor Zhangjigao, a contemporary Chinese scientist of irrigation and water conservancy and educator. In 1955, the department of irrigation and water conservancy was moved to Wuhan Water Resources and Hydropower College (currently known as School of Water Resources and Hydropoer Engineering, Wuhan University, China) and department’s operation at SYAU came to a halt. In 1960, with the arising problems with irrigation and drainage in Liaoning province and shortage of talents in water conservancy, the department of irrigation and water conservancy was reopened at SYAU. In 1969, together with faculties and students, the program of irrigation and water conservancy was moved to the city of Chaoyang. In 1978, Shenyang Agricultural College (former name of SYAU) resumed admission of students and the program of irrigation and water conservancy followed suit. In 1986, the discipline of agricultural irrigation engineering was entitled to begin offering the Master degree. In 1995, the College of Water Conservancy, SYAU was established, ushering in a fast-track development mode for the discipline of agricultural irrigation engineering. In 2003, the discipline of agricultural irrigation engineering became one that offers the PhD degree. In 2005, the discipline of agricultural irrigation engineering started to recruit post-doc researchers. After being listed as a key discipline of SYAU in 2007 and one of the Liaoning Provincial key disciplines in 2008, agricultural irrigation engineering was listed concurrently as a SYAU demonstration course and a Liaoning provincial demonstration course. In 2013, the course of agriculture irrigation engineering became the first undergraduate program at SYAU to start a whole class of international students. In 2014, the program was included in the national project of the agriculture-forestry talent cultivation scheme. In 2017, the program of agriculture irrigation engineering was listed as a SYAU top-notch course and since 2019, undergraduate students with adequate academic competence can apply for a direct enrollment to the course’s PhD study.
Teaching Staff
As one of the earliest courses offered at SYAU since its founding, agricultural irrigation engineering has been presided over by a well age-structured group of seasoned teaching staff including 5 professors, 5 associate professors, 7 lecturers and 1 experimentalist. They all graduated from well-known universities or research institutes at home and abroad. More than half of the teachers have more than one year of study abroad experience. Among them, there are 1 recipients of special allowances from the State Council, 1 specially-appointed professor in Liaoning Province, 1 provincial-level top-notch teacher title winner, 2 school-level top-notch teacher title winners, and 2 were awarded the first-level of talents, 2 the second-level talents and 1 the third-level talent in Liaoning Baiqianwan Program. For years of joint efforts in teaching and research, faculties of irrigation engineering have undertaken more than 30 scientific research projects including the national "863" project sub-projects, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and the Ministry of Agriculture National Public Welfare Project, and won 6 provincial and ministerial awards. More than 500 academic papers have been published, of which more than 50 have been included in SCI and EI. More than 10 monographs have been published and more than 20 invention patentspatents awarded, contributing great momentums and a strong academic influence to the development of irrigation engineering in China.
Teaching Objectives
The course of agricultural irrigation engineering offers a generic study of irrigation engineering in agriculture, committing to having students trained in comprehensive knowledge of irrigation. With the doctoral first-level discipline of agricultural engineering, a Liaoning provincial “double first-class” discipline and Liaoning provincial key discipline, to rely on as a disciplinary and academic base and under the auspices of the being listed as a Liaoning provincial characteristic course and a provincial key laboratory listed by Liaoning Provincial Department of Education and Liaoning Department of Science and Technology as well as the title of Liaoning Innovation Team of Main Crops High-efficiency and Green Utilization of Water, the course of irrigation engineering has the full support to reach its objectives of training students to have a solid mastery of fundamentals and comprehensive understanding of professional knowledge and to be equipped with good abilities and senses of innovation. All in all, the course is dedicated to producing all-round high-level engineering talents capable of technical and research work in agricultural irrigation engineering surveying, planning, design, construction, and management and can professionally and culturally cater to the service of modern agricultural industry that features green, high-tech and sustainable development.
